Choosing a sire for your litter
- Go to see and meet the dog you are planning to use.
- Temperament is very important – not only with people but with other dogs too. Try to see the dog in the company of other dogs, preferably male dogs.
- Does the dog conform to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever breed standard? The Chesapeake Bay Retriever breed standard can be found HERE.
- Choose a stud dog that is not lacking in any of the Breed Standard Requirements
- If you want the puppies to work then check that the stud dog works. If you want the puppies for showing then check that the stud dog has a show record or is good looking enough to show.
Upcoming litters

General
- It is recommended that all dogs and bitches used for breeding have had hips and elbows scored, know what status they are for DM and PRA, and has a clear eye certificate.
- Check that the dog has had all the necessary health checks and that eye test certificate(s) is up to date (i.e. within the past year). Ask to see copies of certificates – the breeder should not object or make.
- If your bitch is a DM or PRA carrier the stud dog MUST be clear (carrier to carrier matings can produce affected puppies).
