Having a Chesapeake Bay Retriever you may want to test its working ability at competitive events call 'Field Trials'. These events resemble a days shooting as close as you would get at a real shooting event. At the field trial event(s) your dog will be expected to pick up rabbits, hare, partridges and pheasants etc.
If you own a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and want it to perform you are more likely to succeed if it comes from working stock.
Some dogs are bred for showing, some as pets, and these dogs may have lost much of their working and hunting instincts, which is very important in working Gundogs. To train your Chesapeake Bay Retriever as a working dog will it require a lot of training, as these working Gundogs can be more demanding than a pet or show dog. They need plenty of exercise off the lead and working in the field.
