Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are also known as Chesapeakes, CBR's or Chessies. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a large, muscular and powerful dog that has webbed feet, a water-resistant coat which is short and thick, a harsh, oily topcoat and a fine, woolly undercoat.
The breed was developed in the United States around Chesapeake Bay area during the 19th century. Chesapeake's has been bred for generations as a working gundog. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are known for their love of water and their ability to hunt. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are described as having a bright and happy disposition, they have courage and a willingness to work.
Chesapeake Bay Retrievers comes in any shade of brown and has yellow or amber coloured eyes. The breed is generally good with children, especially when socialised from a young age, although should be supervised. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is loyal and enjoys human company. This is one of a few breeds where the work and show side are not at all different, and most of the UK show dogs work in one way or another. The breed standard describes a dog fit for work, and it is this standard that dogs are judged on in the show ring.
